Following the highly successful Language and Culture Tour to France in  September-October 2012

"Mille fois merci for a feast of treasures and memorable experiences"  (Marie & Jim, October 2012)

CPEDERF (France Heritage) is pleased to announce their third Language & Culture tour with Emeritus Professor Chris Gossip (University of New England)

FRANCE 2013 :

ALSACE - BOURGOGNE - ALPES DU NORD

A FRENCH LANGUAGE & CULTURE TOUR

(7 nights in Colmar - 5 nights in Beaune - 6 nights in Grenoble)

SUNDAY 15 SEPTEMBER - FRIDAY 4 OCTOBER 2013

The Full Day-to-Day programme, Cost Details and Registration Form are attached to this page : just click on the appropriate document.

These tours are designed especially for members of U3A and Alliance Française branches in Australia, but absolutely anyone keen to practise and perfect their oral French will be most welcome!

An important note : accompanying spouses, partners and friends not interested in learning Frnech will have a separate guided programme when the language participants are in their language-group sessions.

Improve your knowledge of the French language, with abundant practice of listening to and speaking French, as well as developing your knowledge of French culture. Following the models of the 2011 and 2012 tours, the programme will combine serious practical work - group language sessions regularly throughout the tour - with a wide variety of cultural experiences, offering you an enjoyable holiday and ensuring that you return home understanding and speaking French with greater confidence and facility than when you arrived. And having learned quite a bit more about France.

FOLLOWING IS A RESUME OF THE TOUR

Day 1 (15 September) : PARIS

Participants should be settled in the hotel in Paris in time for a get-together session late afternoon. In the evening, a Welcome Dinner.

Day 2 (16 September) : all-day excursion to Colmar

After breakfast, we take the TGV to the World Heritage city of Nancy. This is the only opportunity on the tour to see the magnificent World Heritage Place Stanislas. After lunch, we go to see the extraordinary collection of Daum glassware in the Musée des Beaux Arts. Late afternoon by coach to the picturesque town on Colmar.

Days 3 -8 (17 - 22 September) : exploration of ALSACE, based in Colmar

Hotel : Le RAPP

Guided visit of Colmar and launch cruise the Petite Venise; all-day excursion to the World Heritage city of Strasbourg including lunch in the famous Kammerzell restaurant; visit the Haut Königsberg, the beautiful small town of Kayserberg - birthplace of Albert Schweitzer; after lunch in the lovely town of Obernai an excursion following the Route des vins, culminating with a wine-tasting and group dinner in the wine capital of Riquewihr; an all-day excursion to Mulhouse (a choice of several French national museums); and before the Farewell to Alsace group dinner, a guided visit of the Unterlinden Museum - the place to visit in Colmar!

Days 9 - 13 (23-27 September) : exploration of BOURGOGNE, based in Beaune

Hotel : HENRI II

After the morning drive from Colmar, lunch and settling into the hotel in Beaune, a guided visit of the town, especially to see the celebrated Hospices.

Excursions will include three World Heritage sites : the Vauban Citadelle in Besançon, the Cité Idéale at Arc et Senans, and the Abbey of Fontenay. Another day in the Morvan, following the traces of Celts and Romans at Bibracte and Autun. Lesser known places such as the village of Flavigny, the (alleged) site of the great battle between Caesar and Vercingetorix at Alésia, the village and château of Epoisses, and Semur-en Auxois -historically the most fortified town in Burgundy. Wine will not be forgotten - a morning's instruction and dégustation followed by lunch with the Ecole du Vin in Beaune; a visit to the Clos Vougeot; a drive along the Route des Grands Crus from Nuits-Saint-Georges to Beaune!

Day 14 (28 September) : from Beaune to Grenoble

After breakfast we drive to the lovely Château de Cormatin, before going for lunch in the small town of Cluny, one of the most famous places in the history of Christianity. After lunch we drive to the extraordinary Monastère Royal de Brou for a guided visit before reaching Grenoble in the late afternoon.

Days 15 -19 (29 September - 3 October) : exploration of the ALPES DU NORD, based in Grenoble.

Hotel : SPLENDID

After an afternoon guided visit of Grenoble we take the téléférique up to the Fort de la Bastille for dinner - the restaurant dominates the whole city. An all-day excursion to Annecy, perhaps the most beautiful town and lake in the region : after a festive lunch on the cruise boat taking us round the lake, we visit one of the world's most famous bell-foundries. It is anticipated that an all-day course on French cuisine will precede the final excursion into one of the most extraordinary regions of France, the Vercors.

On the morning of the final day, each member of the group will give a short compte-rendu (preferably in French!) of what has interested him/her most during the tour. In the evening a festive Farewell Dinner in a very good restaurant!

Day 20 ( 4 October) : Departure by TGV for Paris

Anticipated time of arrival in Paris is 13h30 (but this will not be confirmed until April 2013). In any case it would be wise to assume that you could not reach Roissy CDG Airport before about 16h00 if you are flying out this evening.

BEAR IN MIND THAT WE CAN ARRANGE PRE-AND-POST TOUR BOOKINGS FOR YOU IN PARIS IN THE SAME HOTEL AND AT THE SAME RATES CHARGED FOR THE WHOLE GROUP AT THE BEGINNING OF THE TOUR.
