IMPRESSIONISM PROGRAMME 1

IMPRESSIONISM IN PARIS and the ILE DE FRANCE ( = around Paris )

Day 1 : An introduction to French Impressionist painting, starting with a visit to the Orsay Museum (the French National Impressionist Museum), followed by an exploration of Montmartre starting with lunch in the oldest inn in Montmartre where the impressionist painters used to meet and eat. After a walking tour of Montmartre, return to the centre of Paris via a number of the sites which inspired the painters.

Day 2 : Van Gogh, Cézanne, Pissarro and Daubigny. The morning will be spent in Auvers sur Oise, visiting Van Gogh's home as well as that of Dr Gachet. Lunch in one of two inns, either that where Van Gogh lived, or that where Cézanne stayed. Afternoon includes private visit to the house of Daubigny. Return to Paris via Pontoise where Pissarro lived and painted for 17 years with a short visit to the Pissarro Museum. Back in the centre of Paris, a guided visit of Monet's Les Nymphéas in the Orangerie (before discovering the real flowers in Giverny!), as well as of the superb Walter-Guillaume impressionist collection (Monet, Renoir and Cézanne and others).

Day 3 : Where Impressionism was born : the Ile de Croissy. In the morning go direct to Croissy for a walk along the banks of the river Seine where so many masterpieces by Monet, Renoir, Courbet, Morisot, Manet (the Déjeuner sur l'herbe), Van Gogh were painted. Discover on the Ile de Croissy one of Monet and Renoir's favourite subjects, La Grenouillère, while further along the towpath will be found their favourite bistrot, La Fournaise, now an excellent restaurant where lunch is proposed. Later in the afternoon return to Paris for a guided visit of the Marmottan Claude Monet Museum.

Day 4 : Exploring the Forest of Fontainebleau : first to Barbizon (home of the Barbizon School of Painters) via Chailly en Bière (Sisley, Pissarro, Renoir, Monet) and then on to Moret sur Loing for lunch in a restaurant which the impressionists loved to frequent (each dish is a work of art inspired by a painting). The afternoon continues on the theme of Monet & Sisley in Moret, and concludes with Fontainebleau and Impressionism.

ANY OF THESE DAYS CAN BE TAKEN AS SINGLE UNITS, ANY CAN BE TAKEN TOGETHER TO FORM A 2, 3, 4 - DAY PROGRAMME, IN THEIR ENTIRETY, OR AS THE FIRST PART OF A TOUR COMBINED WITH EITHER IMPRESSIONISM (2) AND/OR IMPRESSIONISM (3)

YOUR TOUR WILL BE TAILOR-MADE TO MEET YOUR INDIVIDUAL REQUIREMENTS AND COSTED ACCORDINGLY ONLY WHEN YOU ARE SATISFIED WITH THE PROGRAMME.
