IMPRESSIONISM PROGRAMME 2

GIVERNY (Monet home and gardens)

NORMANDY (Honfleur, Rouen and surroundings)

Day 1 : After leaving Paris, drive through the Seine Valley, passing through villages where Monet lived before settling in Giverny : they  have retained much of the charm they had more than a century ago. On arrival in Giverny, take lunch in a 19th century inn closely linked to the artistic life of Giverny at the time of the Impressionists. After lunch, a guided tour of the home and gardens of Monet at Giverny, which inspired so many of his paintings. The famous lake in the gardens at water lily time is unforgettable! Before leaving, a visit to the new Impressionist museum opening in spring 2009. Late afternoon, drive to Honfleur.

Day 2 : Honfleur, the small town with its lovely port, was most favoured by painters from the Romantics to the Impressionists, and subsequently the Pointillists and Fauvists. There is a popular saying : "If you come to Honfleur, you'll catch the local illness and feel the need to paint"! The guided walking visit of the town is followed by a visit to the Musee Eugene Boudin (one of the most important Impressionist precursors).

Lunch at the Ferme Saint-Simeon, for nearly 50 years the meeting place of all the painters (from Courbet to Monet, and many other famous names), now a superb hotel-restaurant overlooking the estuary. To walk off (literally!) your lunch, stroll around the nearby resorts of Deauville and Trouville, much favoured and painted by the Impressionists.

Day 3 : From Honfleur, drive across the superb Pont de Normandie (one of the great late 20th century engineering masterpieces) into Le Havre (the town and port were declared World Heritage sites in 2006), and where Monet, who lived here from the age of five, painted the view over the port, giving his work the simple designation  Sunrise - an Impression : the name giving birth to the whole movement.

A guided visit of the Andre Malraux Art Museum which has a most important collection of French impressionist works, as well as the recently acquired Senn Foulds collection "from Courbet to Matisse", one of the largest painting requests made in France in recent times.

The afternoon will be given over to exploring as much as possible of the coast between Le Havre and Dieppe (especially Etretat, Fécamp, and possibly Pourville) - a coast line-extremely rich in inspiration for the impressionists and those who followed them!

Drive into the cathedral city of Rouen for the evening.

Day 4 : Morning guided walking tour in the theme : Rouen and the Impressionists, with particular reference to Monet's celebrated series of paintings of the cathedral, finishing at the Fine Arts Museum, which arguably claims to have the finest collection of Impressionist paintings outside Paris.

Have lunch in one of Rouen's most celebrated restaurants situated in a 14th century building (past customers include Sophia Loren, Joyn Wayne, Salvador Dali, Sartre, and Princess Grace of Monaco!!)

Late afternoon : return to Paris

ANY OF THE THESE DAYS CAN BE COMBINED TOGETHER TO FORM A 2 or 3 DAY PROGRAMME, TAKEN IN THEIR  ENTIRETY, OR AS PART OF A TOUR COMBINED WITH IMPRESSIONISM (1) AND/OR IMPRESSIONISM (3).

YOUR TOUR WILL BE TAILOR-MADE TO MEET YOUR INDIVIDUAL REQUIREMENTS AND COSTED ACCORDINGLY ONLY WHEN YOU ARE SATISFIED WITH THE PROGRAMME.
