IMPRESSIONISM PROGRAMME 3

THE FRENCH IMPRESSIONISTS IN PROVENCE : CEZANNE & VAN GOGH

Day 1 : Assuming a departure from Paris, TGV direct to Aix-en-Provence arriving early afternoon, after settling in hotel enjoy a guided visit of the town's lovely historic centre before dinner. Aix is one of the most favoured cities in France as "an ideal place in which to live"!

Day 2 : Cézanne and the inspiration he found in and around Aix. Visit the Atelier de Cézanne (his studio), the Jas de Bouffan (the source of inspiration of some 40 paintings), the Domaine de Marguerite and the Carrières de Bibémus. Lunch in the Relais at Le Tholonet which was a favourite with Cézanne. During the day you will pass very close to the Montagne Ste Victoire - the road to Le Tholonet was one of Cézannes's favourite views of the mountain, painted many times.

Day 3 : The World Heritage town of Arles, for ever associated with Van Gogh. Visit the famous Alyscamps, the gardens of the Maison de la santé, the so-called Pont Van Gogh, and the settings of several others of his great paintings. At the end of the morning, a short drive to St Rémy de Provence, setting of some of his finest works while he was a patient in the Hospice St-Paul-de-Mausole. Lunch taken in an excellent restaurant La Maison Jaune in the heart of Van Gogh country! Then wander along the Van Gogh Way which helps the visitor appreciate some 20 of his greatest works!

Depending on weather, return to Aix by Les Baux de Provence, the most spectacular site in Provence, with its historic village and ruined medieval chateau looking out over the whole region.

Day 4 : Morning visit to L'Estaque - on the outskirts of Marseille to what was once a small coastal town very closely associated with the new trends in European painting at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century. Walk along the Chemin des Peintres - the settings are still sufficiently picturesque to evoke the paintings.

Return to Aix for lunch in the most famous brasserie in the city, Les Deux Garçons, a classified historic site (many famous customers including Churchill, Picasso, Piaf) : Cézanne would pass several hours here in the evening with this friend, the novelist Emile Zola

Late afternoon : return to Paris by TGV

THIS PROGRAMME CAN BE EXTENDED FOR ANOTHER DAY OR TWO :

If your stay in Aix includes a Sunday, it may well be worth considering a trip of the small extremely picturesque port of Cassis, which although close to Marseille has managed to retain much of its earlier charm. Cassis has always been a favourite haunt of painters throughout the 19th and 20th centuries (especially favoured by Derain, Picabia, Signac, and Monticelli). One Sunday a month since 1995 is held the Place aux peintres - a splendid occasion for following latest artistic trends (and having a little financial fling if you feel like it!). You can also consider a launch trip round some of the famous calanques.

If you feel like exploring the Côte d'Azur (the Riviera), then a day or so in Nice might well appeal. A trip to Renoir's house (Les Collettes) at Cagne sur Mer, the two museums : Chagall and Matisse, while lovers of modern art may well like to visit the Modern Art Museum. Excursions around Nice can take you to Monaco, Menton, and up to the ever-popular Saint Paul de Vence!

ANY PART OF THIS PROGRAMME CAN BE ARRANGED AS A SHORTER TOUR, IT CAN BE TAKEN IN PART OR IN ENTIRETY AS PART OF AN EXTENDED TOUR WITH IMPRESSIONISM (1) AND OR IMPRESSIONISM (2).

YOUR TOUR WILL BE TAILOR-MADE TO MEET YOUR INDIVIDUAL REQUIREMENTS AND COSTED ACCORDINGLY ONLY WHEN YOU ARE SATISFIED WITH THE PROGRAMME.
